Ghana participates in book fair in Morroco

A Ghanaian delegation, led by the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Mrs Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare, has returned home after participating in the International Publishing and Book Fair in Casablanca, Morroco.

This year’s fair, the 20th since its inception, targeted member-countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Fourteen ECOWAS countries participated in the fair which had the theme, ‘Experience Cultural Morocco’.

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Morroco, Abdelilah Benkirane, who opened the fair, said Morocco saw ECOWAS states as natural partners in the promotion of cultural and diplomatic ties in Africa.

Hosting the International Publishing and Book Fair, he said, was an avenue through which the government of Morocco was  promoting cultural linkages with the rest of the world.

Speaking at a stakeholder forum with investors and cultural practitioners, Mrs Ofosu-Agyare indicated that there were investment opportunities in Ghana, especially in the tourism and cultural sectors

At meetings with her Moroccan counterparts, she secured the kingdom’s support to build the capacities of Ghanaians pursuing tourism, culture and creative arts in undergraduate programmes in Moroccan universities.

She also secured support for Ghanaian musicians to participate in festivals and musical events in Morroco.

Towards this end, the minister initiated talks aimed at securing collaborations among Ghana’s National Dance Company, National Symphony Orchestra and their Moroccan counterparts.

With her ECOWAS colleagues, she pledged her ministry’s support for a networking of ministers of culture and tourism in West Africa to accelerate the tourism and cultural agenda in the sub-region, in particular, and between West Africa and Morocco.

The delegation was made up of Dr Joel Sonne, Director of Projects at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts; Mr Ralph Nyadu Addo, head of Publishing Studies, KNUST; Ms Diana Ralista Debrah from KNUST’s Book Industry Department; Ms Benedicta Anibri, from the Bureau of Ghanaian Languages; Evelyn Gyau from Adwinsa Publications and Mr William Osei Asibey from Buck Press.
