GES to withdraw students from SHSs for gaining admission inadvertently

The Ghana Education Service (GES) is to withdraw first-year senior high school (SHS) students whose results for the 2013 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) were cancelled but were inadvertently placed in senior high schools.

According to the GES, it is currently waiting for the details on the affected candidates from the Computerised Schools Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat after which it will withdraw the students.

The Director of the Secondary Division of the GES, Rev. Simon Asige, who confirmed this to the Daily Graphic yesterday, could not give the exact number of first-year students who would be affected by the directive.

However, he said, the GES was awaiting the details on the candidates from the CSSPS Secretariat, which carried out the placements, after which it would make the information on the withdrawal of the students public.

By November 1, 2013, a total of 351,881 candidates had been placed, leaving out 40,000 others. These candidates were later given the opportunity to choose from some selected schools with vacancies.

He expressed the hope that by the end of Tuesday, December 17, 2013, the service would have secured the necessary information on the candidates.

"We are waiting for the CSSPS Secretariat to give us the information on the candidates. Immediately we get it we would come out with details of the withdrawal of the students," he said.

Checks by the Daily Graphic at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) indicated that 378 BECE results had been cancelled.

A total of 391,082 candidates wrote the 2013 BECE.

When WAEC released the  provisional results in September,  it said 7270 from 130 schools had their results withheld because of suspicion of examination malpractices.

However, after a series of meetings to determine the fate of the affected schools, all but one were cleared.

At the end of the investigations by WAEC, 63 candidates had their entire results cancelled, while 748 candidates had the results of some of their subjects cancelled.
