Made up of 17 teaching and seven non-teaching staff, the retirees were presented with citations and parcels in recognition of their service.

The ceremony coincided with the fourth Retirees’ Day celebration, orgarnised by the district directorate of the GES.

It was held on the theme: “Retired, but invaluable to the development of education.”

 Experience

Addressing the ceremony at Agona Duakwa, the Agona District Chairman of the Ghana Government Pensioners Association, Mrs Beatrice Hammond, urged the recipients to use the experience acquired in their active years for the benefit of society.

She said they would have ample time to actively impact the lives of the people in the society, now that they were on retirement.

She commended the district directorate of education for instituting the programme as it would encourage those in active service to do their best in order to be recognised and honoured as well.

 Keynote

In a keynote address, a former headmaster of the Ghana National College in Cape Coast, Mr E.K.T. Osam, thanked the retirees for their immense contributions towards improving education in the district.

He urged them to regularly undergo check-ups to know their health status, as their active years had been very challenging with a lot of risks.

Mr Osam reiterated the call on retirees to make themselves available to enable others to benefit from their array of experience.

 Welcome

In a welcome address, the Agona East District Director of Education, Dr Alhaji Abdul Salam Adam, said although the awardees were retired, their services, guidance and directives were needed to continue building from where they left.

He said the retirees were repositories of wisdom and knowledge because of their experiences and therefore pleaded with them to open their doors when they were called upon.

He appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the directorate to sustain the event in subsequent years.
