Gbi Special School needs a vehicle

The Gbi Special School for the intellectually challenged at Gbi-Kledzo, Hohoe is in dire need of a school bus for health, administrative and academic purposes.

The school’s lack of a vehicle is affecting its smooth running especially its efforts at offering immediate medical assistance to the 175 learners made up of 102 boys and 73 girls.

The Assistant Headmistress (Academics), Madam Comfort Wugah, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic in an interview when the Union of Industry, Commerce and Finance (UNICOF) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) presented a photocopy machine worth GHc2,000 to the school.

According to Madam Wugah, the school, established in 2008 with boarding facilities, is faced with a lot of challenges, with the bus being the most pressing need.

Health challenges

She explained that the students were predisposed to health challenges, and therefore often fell sick.

However, due to the fact that the school is situated on the outskirts of Hohoe, it becomes difficult for the caretakers to convey a sick child to hospital especially at night.

“It is not easy at all to get a taxi from this area. In the absence of an official vehicle, the headmaster’s car serves as an ambulance and it is also used for administrative purposes,” Madam Wugah lamented.

She said most of the time when those suffering from epilepsy got attacks, and the headmaster’s vehicle was not available, “we have to wait for several minutes or hours to get a vehicle before we take them to hospital”.

Death of a student

She disclosed that the school lost a boy who suffered a hole in heart last year, and appealed to the government and philanthropists to assist the school to get a bus to support its operations.

Presenting the photocopier, the Vice Chairman of the Volta Region branch of UNICOF, Mr Ebenezer Daniels, said the donation was part of activities earmarked for the celebration of the union’s 10th year anniversary.
