Ga South Municipal Assembly to abolish shift system

The Ga South Municipal Assembly (GSMA) is to abolish the shift system which is currently being operated in public basic schools within the municipality.

The move, according to the Chief Executive Officer of GSMA, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, followed a report received from the District Director of Education concerning the high number of schools operating the shift system within the municipality.

Addressing participants in the first session of the of general assembly of the GSMA in Accra,  he said schools within the municipality had an average of  60 pupils per class.

The situation, he said, was not only hindering the delivery of effective teaching and learning but also affecting the quality of education within the municipality.

Upgrading of schools

Mr Thompson said last year, the assembly invested about GH¢1,598,819 in education, especially in the areas of ensuring the provision of suitable school building for first cycle institutions in the municipality.

“This year, the assembly is going to invest some of its share of District Development Fund (DDF) and Urban Development Grant (UDG) to upgrade selected schools in the municipality and address the issue of the shift system,” he said.

Mr Thompson said the assembly, as part of the measures, would rehabilitate and construct new school blocks to contain the increase in enrolment of pupils in schools.

He, however, said the system would be done in phases, and appealed to corporate bodies to support the assembly in its bid to upgrade and improve education within the municipality.

Noise making

Mr Thompson said the springing up of “one-man churches” within the municipality had, over the past years, become a nuisance because of the “hell of noise” they made to disturb residents.

He said although the assembly had put in place measures to address the situation, the problem still persisted.

Mr Thompson, therefore, warned churches within the municipality to minimise their noise else the assembly would not hesitate to close churches found to be engaging in such act.

Road network

According him, plans were underway to improve and upgrade deplorable roads within the municipality.

Some of the roads Mr  Thompson mentioned were Mandela-Ayigbe Town and Gbawe-Kokrobo lorry station.
