Future Leaders centre supports children

The Future Leaders Underprivileged Children Centre (FLUCC), a charitable organisation that operates in Teshie in Accra, is assisting 154 street children and children from poor families to receive free education and feeding.

The centre has a vocational centre, a microfinance project and facilities for sport proprammes.

Founded by Mr Billa Mahmud under a mango tree in La Apapa in 1998, the centre has progressed through a long history, moving four times from one place to another, until it found a place at Teshie in 2010.

The 154 students at the centre, aged three to 16,  are taken care of by nine teachers and volunteers.

“I want to give those underprivileged children a chance in life,” said Mr Mahmud.

Mr Mahmud’s aim is  to give basic education to street children and children from poor families, before they are sent to public schools.

The FLUCC continues to offer financial support to  the students while in public schools.

“I feed them from Monday to Friday. The priority now is to have a permanent home and school for the needy,” Mr Mahmud explained his plans for the moment.

The support of volunteers from different organisations is very important for FLUCC, because it is financed by donations, unsalaried help and the proceeds from various bags produced by students and sold by volunteers in their home towns.

Ms Manon Bisdorf from Germany, a volunteer from Projects Abroad (PA), an NGO, taught in the preparatory school in Teshie for three months.

“It’s an initiative which is worth being supported and I was very happy to participate in this project,” she summed up.

Mr Fynn Kusi Adjei, Head of Projects Abroad in Accra, agreed that “Mr Mahmud is a good man and the donated money, as well as time, is purposefully applied to the various projects.”

The collaboration between PA and FLUCC started in 2010. Since that time, Projects Abroad has been sending voluntary teachers to Teshie and organises events like wall painting once a year to make the appearance of the school friendlier.

The latest renovation exercise, which included painting of the walls of the school, by volunteers from Projects Abroad started two weeks ago and had since been  completed.
