Foundation offers scholarships to 300 pupils

Executive members of the Foundation for African Children Education (FACE), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), have provided scholarship worth GH¢30,000 for 300 needy, brilliant basic school pupils in 10 selected communities.

The gesture, according to the members, was to enable the beneficiaries to nurture their academic pursuits more meaningfully and become responsible citizens in future.

Thirty pupils selected at various stages at the basic level from the 10 communities in the Central, Volta, Ashanti and Eastern regions will be remitted annually and provided with basic educational materials and school uniforms to motivate them to nurture their potential effectively.

Besides providing GH¢100 for each of the beneficiaries to supplement their feeding, each of them also received a schoolbag, two pairs of school uniforms, shoes, 10 exercise books and recommended English, Mathematics and Science textbooks.

Each of the 300 pupils also received 10 pens, 10 pencils and erasers as part of the support.

Among the communities that benefited from the gesture are Mankoadze and Assin Anyinabrem in the Central Region; Bebome, Afoako, Jachie, Manso Abore and Nyameani in the Ashanti Region; Asokore in the Eastern Region and Agbozome in the Volta Region.

According to a  Co-founder of FACE, Mr George Peprah, the organisation had spent an estimated GH¢600,000  as scholarship  since its inception eight years ago to build the capacity of brilliant, needy pupils across the country.

Presenting the items to pupils at Jachie, near Kuntanase, Mr Peprah said since they started the project eight years ago, they had been able to motivate many needy, brilliant pupils to focus on their academic programmes.

"Many of the pupils we supported are at various stages of developing their careers to enable them to become responsible citizens. We will continue with the gesture as part of our support to nurture the potential of such children," he noted in an address.

An executive member, Nana Opoku Wereko Ampem, urged the beneficiaries to show exemplary academic and moral qualities that befitted the support being offered by FACE.

He advised parents to use the GHc¢100 to feed the pupils as required, noting that reports indicated that some parents used the money as funeral donation, thereby depriving the pupils of their  daily meals.

In her address, the Queenmother of Jachie, Nana Afia Konadu Pankye, commended FACE for its gesture and urged parents to supervise the academic progression of their children.

She said since children were vulnerable, they could easily go wayward if parents reneged on their parental guidance.
