Foundation of Ghana’s education system weak — Anamoah-Mensah

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba, Professor Jophus Anamoah-Mensah, has described the foundation of Ghana’s education system as weak.

“The education system itself should be restructured to incorporate differential learning which enables weak students to receive support. Fortunately, the Ministry of Education is putting measures in place to address this,” he said.

Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said this at the maiden graduation of the Antioch Theological and Leadership Institute on Saturday.

He also described as unacceptable the current approach of using remedial classes to solve the challenges of the education system, adding that the solution did not lie in organising more remedial classes.

According to him, primary and junior high school students cannot read and write, and opined that after six years of primary schooling, only 39 per cent of pupils could exhibit proficiency in English.

Poor performance of students

He indicated that the poor performance of students in Science and Mathematics in both the junior and senior high schools could partly be attributed to the poor understanding and articulation of the English Language.

He also noted that the reading culture in schools was missing, thus pupils did not take interest in reading. According to him, the result is that “students speak a language that is neither a mother tongue nor English”.

“This baggage is carried over to the next level of education where it continues to create problems for students in their studies. This fundamental problem needs to be addressed with all seriousness,” he added.

Biblical training

The Director of Operations at the Antioch Theological and Leadership Institute, Apostle James Nii-Amponsah, said the institute’s vision was to select Christian leaders to be trained in sound biblical doctrines and prayer.

In all, 23 students graduated after undergoing a one-year training programme in biblical studies, prayer, effective leadership skills and the attainment of financial security.
