They were selected from among several others who took part in a written exam and an aptitude test, and passed a Curriculum Vitae (CV) test online.

The programme, which is the first of its kind, was aimed at empowering the graduates in leadership skills, as well as helping to reduce the unemployment rate in the country.

The selected participants with diverse educational backgrounds will also go through a series of interviews and discussions, out of which the 10 that excel will be recruited  to work with the company for 12 months.

The programme is part of the company’s comprehensive strategy to grow business across the continent.

According to the Talent Development Leader of the programme, Ashie Singh, a research conducted revealed that there was inadequate training skills development in Africa.

She stated that the highly theoretical nature of education, as well as the blend of some courses being treated at schools, was to blame for graduates’ inability to secure jobs, although a lot of opportunities for education and business were available.

Ashie Singh commended the government for the compulsory training of graduates through the National Service Scheme, saying it was a step in the right direction.

She advised that businesses work with educational institutions to enable the country to reach a point where education would get to know what businesses required.

The Human Resource Director of Cummins Incorporation Africa, Mr John Havener, stated that Cummins would be operating in the country for a long time and that the graduates who were shortlisted for the internship programme would undergo training to groom them for leadership roles in the company.

Mr Havener stated that it would take more than just government efforts to improve education and the employment rate in the country. He, therefore, urged other companies to reach out and make education a priority in their corporate social responsibility activities.

The Managing Director of Cummins Ghana, Mr Akunor Azu,said the environment and the growth rate of the country was very encouraging, adding that the company would  focus on increasing investment in the country in order to increase growth.
