The board, mandated to work for three years, is headed by Mr Ayyub Morgan, Registrar of the Community University College in Takoradi.

Other members of the board were a representative of the Director General of Education, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Fomena Traditional Council, old students association, parents teachers association, head of the school, district chief executive, faith-based organisations and a representative of the teaching staff, among others.

Inaugurating the board, the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr Kofi Sarfo-Kantanka, said the concept of board of governors was based on the policy of community participation in education which the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) accept as an indispensable part of the process of quality education, as the activities of the school cannot be divorced from the community whose interest the school seeks to serve.

He urged the new board members to bring their rich experiences to bear on their new role to help project the positive image of the school to the community and the nation during their tenure of office.

Mr Sarfo-Kantanka mentioned that some of  the duties of the board were supporting the implementation of general policy of the institution subject to any directive from the Ministry of Education, while ensuring the good administration of funds of the institution, by examining their financial audit reports and also assist school heads to discharge their duties but cautioned them not to encroach upon the authority and responsibility of the head.

He lamented the indiscipline and the spate of student’ unrest in schools,  which,  he said, had reached levels that were not only disturbing but threatening the very existence of society and called on the board members to help the school authorities to find solution to the problem.

Mr Sarfo-Kantanka urged the school authorities to liaise with the board and co-ordinate effectively in addressing all major issues to prevent mistrust and suspicion between the board and the administration.

The headmistress of the school, Madam Zainab Adam, in her welcome address, said the school established in 1968 with 15 students now had a population of 1255 students comprising 668 boys and 587 girls.

She said the school recorded 100 per cent pass in the May/June, 2010, 2011 and 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination and attributed the feat to hard work and discipline on the part of students, teachers and other stakeholders in the school.

The Board Chairman, Mr  Morgan, on behalf of the members, pledged to render selfless service to bring development to the school and appealed to stakeholders to support the board to enable it to attain high quality results and improve upon both academic performance, social and moral development.
