Farmer societies educated on child labour

Ninety four farmer societies in the Bibiani and Sefwi Wiawso districts in the Western Region have been educated on  ways to prevent child labour, under the Danida Business Project.

The three-year project which is being implemented by IBIS, a non-governmental organisation, and Armajaro Ghana Limited has helped 152 young people to enrol in various vocational institution.

Under the same project, capacities of 30 Community Child Protection Communities (CCPC) in developing action plans have also been built.

The IBIS Programme Director, Prosper Kwasi Nyavor, said this when a delegation from Denmark, led by the Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Miss Margaret Thompson, visited some of the farmers at Kwamekrom.

He said the project was aimed at supporting cocoa farmers to improve their yields by adopting sustainable farming practices.

The delegation included the Danish Minister for Trade And Development, Morgen Jensen, and  some workers from Toms Company, a chocolate producing company that buys cocoa from Armajaro.

According to him, IBIS handling the education and child labour component while Armajaro Ghana Limited is implementing the farmer training component.

He added that  farmers had benefitted so much from the project and testified that it had improved their yields.

Mr Jensen expressed delight with the good work done by Armajaro and IBIS and stated that the quality of cocoa produced in Ghana had a good reputation on the world market.

He, however, expressed concern that farmers who produced the cocoa beans did not enjoy the end product.

He advised Ghanaians to patronise cocoa because it was highly nutritious and everyone needed it.
