EP Church, Lake Michigan Presbytery award scholarship to five

The Synod Moderator of the Ho East Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG), Rev. Sammy Aaron Amoako, has stressed the need for people in society, especially the church, to contribute towards the education of brilliant children whose parents cannot afford the cost of their education.

He noted that poverty was a social canker that led to many social vices and pointed out that, God had blessed many people but they were not assisting others to also achieve their goals in life.

He made the statement at a short presentation ceremony, during which a scholarship package was presented to five needy, brilliant students, made up of four girls and a boy, to enable them to complete their senior high school (SHS) education, in their various boarding schools.

The Ho East Presbytery of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG), in partnership with Lake Michigan Presbytery, USA, awarded the five students with the full scholarship.

Though some children from wealthy backgrounds could also engage in crime, Rev. Amoako noted that in most cases, it was the poor who were vulnerable and who usually were caught in the web of crime.

Positive living

Offering educational support for such people, he said, would rid the country of prostitution, armed robbery, hired assassins, smugglers and others, “because for a society to be relieved of such practices, its citizens needed to be equipped for positive living.”

He appealed to well-meaning Ghanaians to donate towards the scholarship fund set up by the two churches to push needy students far on the education ladder, pointing out that, the church had received numerous applications for scholarship which confirmed the notion that, many people attached importance to education.

Rev. Amoako said he would have loved to help all applicants but their resources were limited “that is why as a people we need to help one another”.

Rev. Amoako advised the beneficiaries to learn hard so contributions made towards their education would bear fruit for the nation, adding “ we very much abhor laziness. It is not cheap money. It is money meant to propel you for progress”.
