A13-member board of governors has been inaugurated for the Enyan Abaasa Technical Institute (ABATECH) in the Ajumako-Enyan District in the Central Region.

The board, the first for the school since it was absorbed by the government into the public education system in 2010, has a three-year term.

Members of the board

The members of the board are Mr Kwesi Sam Woode, Mr John Kodjoe Afedzie Yanney, Mr Joseph Kojo Mensah, Mr Samuel Addison, Mr Patrick Ebo Ansah, Nana Kojo Ewudah and Mr Ernest Agbesi Keh.

The rest are Mr Stephen R. Amoah, Mr Augustus K. Amoah, Mr Jacob Kor, Mr Alex Bimah, Mr K.B.Ofori as well as a representative of the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service.

Inaugural Address

In his inaugural address, Mr Jacob Kor, the Central Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service, advised the board against usurping the powers of the school’s administration to prevent antagonism among them.

He noted that the essence of school boards was to allow the community to be actively involved in the effective running and administration of second cycle institutions.

He urged members of the board to collaborate effectively with the school authorities to instil discipline among the students and the teachers.

According to him, the mandate of the board was to ensure proper financial management in the school so that the school judiciously used its resources towards the development of the school.

Principal of the school

The Principal of ABATECH, Mr Augustus K. Amoah, said that the school was established some 19 years ago as a community school to train the youth in employable skills.

He stated that in the 2010/2011 academic year, the government gave approval for the school to operate as a public day institution.

He, however, said the school needed workshops for its five departments to enable students to undertake practical lessons.

He also said the institute had no vehicle, making it difficulty in responding to assignments outside the school, stressing that it also needed additional classrooms to accommodate the increasing student population.

Mr Amoah commended the district assembly for the ongoing construction of a three-unit classroom block with an appeal to the government to ensure speedy completion of the project.

Nana Okofo Otsiwah III, the acting President of the Enyan Abaasa Traditional Area, who chaired the function, urged the students to take advantage of the numerous opportunities in the technical field, to build a prosperous future.
