‘Ensure quality standards in tertiary education’

The Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, has tasked the National Accreditation Board (NAB) to ensure the maintenance of quality standards in tertiary education in the country.

She said the NAB had a huge responsibility to maintain educational standards in view of the growing number of tertiary institutions in the country, which currently stands at 131.

“NAB is a crucial player in quality assurance in tertiary education in the country. I urge us all to collaborate with them, while NAB continues to clarify rules of engagement with all stakeholders,” the minister said.

 

Inauguration

Prof. Opoku-Agyeman made the call when she inaugurated the reconstituted 15-member board of the NAB, which is under the chairmanship of Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah, in Accra yesterday.

She urged the members to continue to foster the needed collaboration with relevant institutions to find lasting solutions to the constraints of funding the unprecedented growth in the number of private tertiary institutions, among other challenges.

In response, Professor Ampiah said the members of the board were assuming office at a time the demand for tertiary education was very high, leading to the springing up of many universities, university colleges and other tertiary institutions.

He said the board would ensure that the role of NAB, which was, among others, to promote quality assurance in higher education, encourage the improvement of academic standards and the quality of learning opportunities, wasmet.

Members of the board include Professor E.K.A. Osam and Dr R.E.M. Entsua-Mensah, who are government nominees; Mr Robertson Akwei Allotey, representing the Public Services Commission; the Very Rev Sam Nii Nmai Ollenu, West African Examinations Council (WAEC); Rev Professor J.O.Y. Mante of the Ghana Association of Private Tertiary Institutions, Prof. G.D.D. Kuupole and Dr Daniel Bagah, both from Vice-Chancellors’ Ghana.

The rest are Mr Richard Dadey from the Association of Recognised Professional Bodies; Professor Nicholas N.N. Nsowah-Nuamah from the Conference of Rectors of Polytechnics; Professor K.B. Omane-Antwi from the Conference of Heads of Private Universities Ghana; Professor P.N. Buatsi from the National Board for Professional & Technicians Examination; Professor Nii Noi Dowuona from the National Council of Tertiary Education and Mr Kwame Dattey, the Executive Secretary, of the NAB National Accreditation Board.
