Parents have been called upon to encourage their children to take keen interest in art and creative work in schools.

The Deputy Executive Director (Artistic) of the National Theatre of Ghana, Ms Amy Appiah Frimpong, who made the call, indicated that art helped build in students admirable habits which could be transferred to the study of other subject areas.

She explained that by participating actively in art, students developed confidence, endurance and perseverance among others, which would help them perform creditably in all subject areas.

“Study shows that students who are involved in art are four times more likely to be recognised for academic achievement, three times more likely to win an award for their school and they tend to be more than average students,” she said.

Ms Appiah Frimpong was speaking at the 45th Art Festival of the Lincoln Community School (LCS) in Accra.

The Art Festival

The programme, which formed part of the school’s 45th anniversary, exhibited artwork put together by grade 6 and 7 students inspired by renowned Ghanaian artist Ablade Glover and US artist Jennifer Goss.

The night was characterised by music, drama, poetry and comedy with performances from the school’s drama group and school choir and the national theatre drama troupe.

Ghana’s renowned jazz singer Ofie Kodjoe also stormed the place with performances from her collection of songs.

Other Speakers

Speaking to the Daily Graphic, the Director of Advancement of LCS, Ms Cynthia Davis Hall, said 45 years in the life of any institution was very significant and worth celebrating.

She said the school’s curriculum had attained a reputation that allowed students to understand creativity and service.

Ms Rebecca Jardin said art was a holistic way of educating a child yet people took it for granted because they were not aware of its importance and advised that parents learn to see the value of art education in children.
