The abandoned science laboratory project

Efutu Senior High School appeals for completion of projects

Abandoned projects at the Effutu Senior High School in the Cape Coast metropolis are affecting discipline and effective teaching and learning in the school.

Headmaster of the school, Mr Johnny Nartey says there are only five teachers on campus managing the almost 1,000 students because of the lack of teachers’ bungalows on campus.

He has therefore appealed to government to complete all abandoned projects to ensure an improved environment conducive for learning.

The Effect
Mr Nartey said only five of the 80 teachers reside on campus with the rest residing in Cape Coast and so commute to the school every morning.

“When the Form One students come to school we have a student population of about 1,500,” he said, adding that most of these were in the boarding house and needed effective supervision and control.

He said five teachers managing about 1,000 adolescents in an unfenced school can be one hectic task.

“Some of them run away from school easily unnoticed. This is not good for effective academic work. In fact it is negatively affecting academic work.”

Meanwhile teachers bungalow projects began some years ago have been abandoned.

Again, a science laboratory project also began over five years ago has been left uncompleted while a boys’ dormitory project has also been abandoned.

He said though the school was doing its best to ensure its students got the best of education, completion of these projects would make this far more achievable.

He called for support to help fence the school.

Visitors Lounge
The 2014/2015 year group of the school has inaugurated a visitors’ lounge for the school.

Mr Nartey said the initiative by outgoing students of the school to undertake a project for the school was gradually becoming a culture and commended the students for the efforts.

He said this shows the spirit of patriotism built in the students and urged others to emulate the example.

The Patron of the Students’ Representative Council of the School, Ms Joyce Allotey thanked the students for their commitment to completing the project.
