Educational institutions asked to justify values of academic integrity

The founder of the Salt and Light Ministries, Rev. Dr Joyce Aryee, has called on the management and parents of educational institutions to institute policies that promote and justify the values of academic integrity.

She said it was necessary to use educational dialogue and national conversation, institutional actions, to inform and educate the entire country regarding academic integrity policies and procedures to stem the scary trend in the decay of integrity in education, and avoid academic dishonesty.

She also pointed out that examination malpractices should not be seen as the way to succeed in life.

She made the observations as the guest speaker at the 59th Speech and Prize Giving Day ceremony of the Accra Ridge Church School.

At the event, two long serving teachers due for retirement were honoured for their dedication to hard work and service.

Integrity

Rev. Dr Aryee emphasised the need for children to be inculcated with integrity and discipline from a tender age.

She said those were key to success as they showed the character of every individual in the society, and added that, if parents did their best to instill integrity in their children, with integrity, they would grow up to be good citizens.

“Integrity is key in every society as that allows people to deal ethically with the challenges of each day and to make conscious decisions about how they will approach every decision they have to make,” she stated.

She noted further that society was plagued with immoral behaviour such as lying, cheating, stealing, drug and alcohol abuse.

As an academic institution, Rev. Dr Aryee said there was the need for the school to have clear integrity statements, policies and procedures which would be consistently implemented.

But that could only be achieved if they were practised rigorously from top to down, she added.

Moral courage

She also urged the students to have the moral courage to stand up for what was right and wrong, and not condone evil as that destroyed the society.

“When the test of your character and moral courage comes, there will be a moment of inner silence in which you must decide what to do,” she stated.

Performance

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Efuah Dake, in her annual report said the school improved its performance in the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.

She said the school recorded 96.4 per cent passes in Basic Design and over 70 per cent of candidates recorded grade one in English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Religious and Moral Education (RME) and Pre-Technical Skills.

Mrs Dake added that for the fifth consecutive time the school had won the annual inter-school basket ball tournament.

She also announced that  Miss Efua Manukure Ansah who represented Ghana at the International Spelling B Contest, held in the United States of America (USA), placed 20th; a competition which attracted over 200 participants worldwide.
