Education Ministry launches school mapping portal

The Ministry of Education has launched a school-mapping portal for all senior high schools (SHSs) in the country to improve access to information for the public and educational planners.

The school mapping activity, which is under the Secondary Education Improvement Project (SEIP), involves the development of a website to show the profiles of all SHSs in the country, including their geographical location.

What it entails

“At this website, users will find a map of Ghana in which all SHSs, both public and private are marked by a dot. When the user hovers the mouse over the dot, a basic profile will be shown on the screen. Information, among others will be the school name, enrolment and WASSCE performance,” the Education Minister, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang told guests at the launch.

She said detailed profile such as number of trained teachers, availability of places for placement purposes, teacher to student ratio, distance from district capital, as well as enrolment and programme offered could be found in the portal.

Potential

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the portal had the potential to significantly improve the management of schools by the Ghana Education Service (GES), operating under the ministry.

“It will do so by enhancing the spatial understanding of educational facilities at the senior high school level for quality improvement.

“It also has the potential of being rolled to institutions at other levels. This will inform decision making at the ministry for planning and resource allocation,” she explained.

She was excited with the development of the portal, explaining that it would provide a platform at the Ministry of Education to monitor information on the SEIP implementation, provide links with the education management information system, as well as other existing sourcing of education and socioeconomic data.

The Minister of Communication, Dr Omane Boamah, in a remark, was happy that a portal had been developed to ensure timely delivery and access of information.

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of pre-tertiary, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, explained that the portal would ensure that resources were allocated to the most needy places.

The Ag Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), Mr George Atta-Boateng, said it was gratifying that the portal had been launched because it would help students know what courses the various schools offered and would guide them in their choice of schools.
