Education: Improved access comes for prison inmates

The Ministry of Education says it is collaborating with the Centre for National Distance Learning and Open School (CENDLO) to improve access to education particularly for prison inmates and deprived youth.

When the Ministry took its turn at the Meet the Press series Tuesday, the Minister for Education, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang said the programme will provide open and distant access to education as well as enhance quality.

According to her, the pilot open school system saw the enrolment of 632 students last year and is expected to increase to about 882. She however stressed that emphasis will be placed on the youth and prison inmates at the JHS, SHS, Technical and Vocational level programmes.

As part of efforts to enhance quality education delivery, she said the centre is developing an E-learning platform that will be called i-Campus and will help students self-tutelage while learning at their own pace.

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang explained that the centre has commenced the production of some 355,000 video CDs on programmes for JHS/SHS Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Integrated Science and Social Studies as well as 60 lessons each for Home Economics and Technical programmes to be distributed across the country in the next few weeks

She added that the Ministry will provide 70 lessons each for Integrated Science and Social Studies as well as 60 lessons for Home Economics and pre-Technical for JHS.
