Education directorate lauds CBE concept

A Deputy District Director of Education in the Upper West Region has hailed the Complementary Basic Education (CBE) concept of the Ghana Education Service (GES), describing it as a practical step to end child illiteracy in the country.

Mr Maurice Zieche said the concept would encourage school dropouts and those who had not previously experienced formal education, to enrol in school for their benefit and that of the society.

Mr Zieche made the observation at Sagu in the Wa East District when 50 children, drawn from rural communities in the area, graduated after a nine-month training programme, to aid their enrolment into the formal education system.

The CBE concept, currently being sponsored by the United Kingdom's Department for International Development (DFID), is an initiative of the GES which seeks to draft school- age children outside of the school system into the formal education system.
