The Chief Justice, Mrs Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, has advised institutions of higher learning to enhance students’ awareness of ethical issues.

Mrs Justice Wood made the call in a speech read on her behalf at the sixth congregation of the Wisconsin International University College (WIUC-GH) in Accra.

In all, 909 students graduated, out of which 683 were awarded first degrees. The remaining 226 were post-graduate students.

Mrs Justice Wood said despite the tremendous technological and economic  advancements, social injustices, pollution, corruption and underdevelopment continued to be the bane of many societies in Africa. She attributed the problem to the lack of respect for ethical values.

“In our country, traditional family values of courtesy and the protection of the family resources have been affected with the growth of individualism,” she added.

The situation, she said, had contributed to the kind of foul language heard on the airwaves and the negative attitude towards those in authority and workplace.

She urged the graduates to see themselves as servants and exhibit high sense of professionalism in all their endeavours, adding: “Being truly professional, however, requires that you concern yourself with maintaining high ethical standards.”

The Vice Chancellor of WIUC-GH, Professor Kofi Oduro-Afriyie, for his part, tasked the graduates to be agents of change in all aspects of life with the knowledge they had acquired from the school.

He encouraged the students to use the entrepreneurial skills they had acquired to create job opportunities for themselves and others in the society to reduce the unemployment burden the country was currently faced with.
