Eastern Region to get two new universities - Mahama
Two new universities are to be established at Donkorkrom in the Afram Plains area and Somanya in the Eastern Region, President John Dramani Mahama has said.

The new universities are part of government’s interventions to build a university in each region.
President Mahama made this known during his State of the Nation Address in Parliament Thursday.
Highlighting the progress made in the education sector, the president said government was on course in transforming six polytechnics into universities.
He also stated that there were plans for establishing an Islamic teacher training college in the country as part of measures to increase teacher trainee enrollment.
He also noted that interventions such as the removal of teacher trainee allowances and the quota system had led to increased enrollment in the colleges.
The president said new interventions such as the Teacher Professional Development programme were in the offing and were aimed at training 95 per cent of teachers at the basic level by 2020.
President Mahama stated that the Compulsory Education Programme had also led to the enrolment of 54,800 children into various schools in four regions.
According to him, the directive for textbooks to be printed in the country had led to the creation 1,400 new direct jobs.
On the construction of new secondary schools, President Mahama said some 123 community day senior high schools were being built across the country and were at various stages of completion, adding that, “The current Community Day SHS programme will be the biggest intervention in Ghana's education history.”
