‘Don’t use school furniture for social events’

The Ho Municipal Education Director, Mr Mawusi Alexander Buadi, has expressed concern about the use of mono desks belonging to public schools in the various schools as seats for social events in the municipality, since it leads to their frequent destruction.

He said in the Ho Municipality, it was common for members of the communities to use these desks for outdoor programmes such as funerals, church services, naming ceremonies, among others.

Mr Buadi expressed the concern in an interview with Daily Graphic during a ceremony to hand over 1,000 mono desks out of an expected 3,000 to the municipal education office by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) for distribution to some selected schools in the municipality.

Pressure on the desks

He said the desks were designed the pupils and not for adults, pointing out that, “When you go round schools in the municipality, you will see that a lot of the desks are broken. It is all because of the pressure on them by the people who use them for social activities.”

According to him, the problem was compounded by the fact that there were no artisans to repair the desks when they got broken, hence, they were wasted while children continued to suffer because of inadequate furniture.

He indicated that the directorate would enforce strict measures to ensure that School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) used the desks for the intended purpose, warning that school authorities who failed to provide the needed protection for their school’s properties would be sanctioned accordingly, since there were codes that enjoined the public to take care of public properties.

Enhancing teaching

The desks were supplied by the GETFund to help enhance teaching and learning by making pupils more comfortable in their various classrooms and also create conducive environment for them.

The Ho Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mrs Fafa Adinyira, who handed over the desks to the education office, said the distribution formed part of a programme initiated by the GETFund to refurbish basic schools.

She observed that some pupils in most schools did not have desks and as a result some of the children sat on kitchen stools in classrooms.

The MCE called on school authorities to handle the desks properly to offer the pupils the needed comfort in order to improve upon the performance of the schools within the municipality.
