District directors will be graded based on BECE results — GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has decided to rate and grade district directors of education according to performance of pupils at the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE).

Thus directors in districts where pupils perform well in accordance with a threshold would be rated as performing whereas those in districts where pupils performed below the threshold would be rated Ω non-performing.

The Krachi West Director of the GES, Alhaji Mumin Hammed Imoro, stated this at the opening ceremony of a Science and Mathematics workshop for teachers drawn from the Krachi West and Krachi Nchumuru districts of the Volta Region.

The workshop was part of activities to mark the World Day Against Child Labour on the theme “End Child Labour in Supply Chains in Ghana: Together We Can”, which was organised by the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), in collaboration with Education International and Partners in Community Development (PACODEP).

Positive impact

Alhaji Imoro implored the teachers to take lessons from the workshop seriously to enable them to impact positively on pupils to perform well at the examinations so that he would not be rated as a non-performing district director.

The Assistant Headmaster of the Krachi Secondary Technical Senior High School (KRASTECH), Mr Daniels Adonae, said in this era of information and communication technology, there was the need for teachers to regularly undertake courses to enable them to withstand the challenge posed by their students and pupils who had the opportunity to access knowledge on the internet.

He said the school library was in a deplorable state, adding there was a huge stock of relevant books, but were kept on the floor and called for the rehabilitation of the library to enable the students to benefit from the facility.

It is on record that GNAT had organised training programmes for teachers in communities prone to child labour starting from 2011, with four regions so far having benefitted from the programme.

This year, GNAT has organised a training workshop for 100 teachers drawn from Krachi West and Krachi Nchumuru districts and also donated 50 life jackets to teachers on islands on the Volta Lake.
