DFID finances project to re-enrol school drop-outs
The UK-based Department for International Development (DFID) is financing an educational project, “Ghana Complementary Basic Education” (GCBE), to re-enrol school drop-outs aged eight to 14 to continue their education.

Its implementation is a collaborative effort between the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Education and Crown Agent and it is scheduled for the period 2013-2015.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Busunya, the Nkoranza North District Director of Education, Mr James Appiah-Kusi, did not disclose the amount involved but said school drop-outs from the district would benefit from the project.
He explained that the project was geared towards achieving the objectives of quality education under the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Mr Appiah-Kusi said Pronet North, an NGO supporting basic school education, had been assigned to implement the project in the district and would undertake sensitisation programmes to create awareness and register children for the project.
He said pupils registered for the project would be offered nine months’ training in their local language, literacy and numeracy, after which they would be examined before their integration into formal schools.
In another development, the Nkoranza North District Directorate of Education has established eight new junior high schools (JHS) in selected communities to make education accessible to pupils in deprived areas.
The communities are: Tanfiano Number One, Konkrompe, Akonkonti, Adoe, Timiabu, Boana, Dwenewoho and Tom.
Mr Appiah-Kusi appealed to stakeholders in education in the communities to arrange for decent accommodation for teachers posted to the schools to help develop education there.
