‘Develop programmes to support Fashion Design graduates’

The Chairman of the Radford University College (RUC), Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, has called on the government to develop a sustained programme to support Fashion Design graduates in the country to enable them to set up their own jobs rather than rely on it (government) for employment.

According to him, the government could support graduates including assisting them to secure loans and sewing machines, to set up private enterprises.

Nana Sarpong made the call at the launch of this year’s Graduate Fashion Show which is organised by the university annually.

The event, slated for July 2 at the Kempiski Hotel in Accra, will see graduates from the Fashion and Design Department of the RUC in Accra showcasing collections of their designs.

During the launch at the RUC, some graduates exhibited designs that would be showcased at the Graduates Fashion Show.

Degree in Fashion Design

The Radford University College  in Accra is the premier university to offer a degree course in fashion design in the country.

RUC has made Fashion Design an integral part of its curricula. It has produced a number of graduates who are making it big on the international market.

For instance, international news network CNN, featured Papa Oppong, the best fashion design graduate of the RUC last year. He is currently in the United States mounting various exhibitions.

The fashion industry, Nana Sarpong said, was a lucrative one because people wore and changed dresses every day.

“I am taking this opportunity to appeal to the government to look at the fashion industry and the training institutions that are into fashion. This is to encourage the students. If the government can give them some capital upon completion of their courses, the better. They can be given sewing machines, among others,” he said.

Nana Sarpong said it was obvious that the government alone could not create jobs, and that it was incumbent upon institutions such as banks to support.

“One of the ways to address the unemployment situation in Ghana is to look at the fashion industry because we wear and change clothing every day. The unemployment situation in Africa is very serious and it is a source of worry to governments”.

The university, he said, had dedicated itself to the production of entrepreneurs who would set up their own businesses.
