Deputy minister inspects projects for three tertiary institutions

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Education, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has inspected ongoing projects in three tertiary institutions in Accra.

The projects, which are all GETFund-sponsored, are a permanent secretariat of the Association of African Universities (AAU) at East Legon; a GH¢12 million library complex and lecture rooms for the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) and a 1,000-seating capacity auditorium and a demonstration school block at the Accra College of Education.

At the AAU secretariat, the minister and his entourage were conducted round by the consultant of the project, Mr Anthony Atta-Bosompem, in the company of the contractor, Mr George Asumandu.

Mr Ablakwa was impressed with the progress of work and commended the contractors of the project, Asumandu Construction Works Ltd., for working round the clock to finish it ahead of schedule.

He said it was a pride for Ghana to win the bid to host the secretariat and explained that since 1970 when the country won the bid, the secretariat had been housed in rented premises so it was gratifying that the government was putting up a permanent secretariat for the association.

He explained that the project being constructed was phase one which would accommodate the secretariat and other offices, adding that phase two would serve as the residential facility for the secretary-general of the association.

At the UPSA, Mr Ablakwa was conducted round a six-storey library and lecture rooms and offices.

The Deputy Director of Works of the university, Mr Edward Odjidja, who conducted the minister and his entourage round, explained that all was set for the library to be opened to the students by March this year.

The 1,300 seating capacity facility has a disability facility and a lift. It also has an e-learning centre, an executive learning centre and other facilities, including offices.

Mr Odjidja explained that the library project was initially financed with  internally generated funds, and later supported with funds from the GETFund, and added that, currently it was left with the furnishing.

Mr Ablakwa described the library as “a magnificent edifice” and was happy that the school had been able to complete it, and added that the e-learning centre was a useful place of learning.

  Accra College of Education

At the Accra College of Education, the minister was conducted round by the Principal of the college, Mrs Christiana Bampoh Henaku, during which he inspected an ongoing 1,000-seater auditorium and demonstration school, to be used by students of the school for practical work.
