‘Daycare centres must register with Social Welfare Department’

The Tema office of the Social Welfare Department has urged operators of daycare centres in the metropolis to adhere to requirements of registering with the department.

The Tema Metropolitan Director of Social Welfare Department, Mr George De-graft Assan, told the Ghana News Agency that currently 69 daycare centres were operating in the metropolis without registration and, as a result, might be forced to close down.

According to him, a total of 144 daycare centres had duly registered and were operating under categories A, B, and C certificates, depending on their facilities.

He indicated that a certificate that was renewed annually was issued to daycare centres after satisfactory reports by the Social Welfare Officials who undertook inspections at the centres.

He explained that some requirements his outfit looked out for included classroom space, toilet facility, ventilation, school furniture, playing ground, qualification of staff, food given to children, and first aid box, among others.

Mr Assan said when officials were not satisfied with the facilities, they advised the operators on what to do, after which a renewal certificate was issued.

He said the Family Tribunal in 2013 handed 1,111 reports that comprised 918 old cases and 193 new cases sent there by his outfit.

Out of the 1,111, those resolved were 59, while eight were sent to the Alternative Dispute Resolution  (ADR) Centre.

He added that 821 of the cases were maintenance issues, while 101 dealt with welfare.  The rest were 100 for custody, 29 defilement, 23  paternity and two stealing cases.
