“Of particular interest are the syllabi for the teaching and learning of languages, Mathematics, Science and general reading literacy,” she added.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang gave the directive when she inaugurated a 21-member council in Accra yesterday.

 Mandate of council

The council, chaired by Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, will among others, ensure an inclusive and representative curriculum development process, as well as guide curriculum development in a timely manner.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the council was also expected to, as soon as possible, review the criteria for the appointment of members of the syllabus panels and assess the process for selecting teaching and learning materials for the basic and secondary levels.

She expressed conviction that the council was appropriately composed of individuals who would see the bigger picture of developing education and by extension, the future of the country.

Outlining the functions of the council, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said the council was also supposed to review and periodically make recommendations on the linkages between tertiary and pre-tertiary education after consultations with the Minister of Education, the National Council for Tertiary Education, the National Accreditation Board and other relevant organisations.

In addition, she said, the council was mandated to “approve the time table arrangements for the relevant educational institutions, and also receive reports on the quality and quantities of textbooks and any other materials of educational value, and make the appropriate recommendation to the minister.”

Other functions of the council, Professor Opoku-Agyemang said, were to receive reports on monitoring assessments, school-based assessments and end of course examinations and make recommendations on the nature of examinations and any other recommendations for improving learning in educational institutions.

 Expectations

She reminded members that the council stood poised as a driving force for sustaining quality education at the pre-tertiary level which was a key stage in the academic experiences of young leaners.

“Under its new membership, the expectation is that the council will take steps to rebrand education at the pre-tertiary level in order to raise confidence in the education system,” she said.

In a response, Professor Anamuah-Mensah thanked the President through the Ministry of Education for the trust reposed in them and pledged on behalf of members that they would work to justify their appointment.
