Consider setting up institute for ICT training, Asantehene tells MTN

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged MTN to consider establishing a technical institute to offer higher education to the youth who are turned away by the universities due to lack of space.

He expressed worry that a large number of brilliant and qualified youth who sought admission to tertiary institutions had their dreams dashed and called for action to ensure that such people had access to education to become ICT experts.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu made the call when a delegation of MTN officials called on him to introduce the newly appointed CEO of MTN Ghana, Mr Ebenezer Asante Twum. Mr Twum is the first Ghanaian CEO.

Distance education
The Asantehene added that MTN could also liaise with other universities to provide distance education for other qualified applicants who would not have the opportunity to physically sit in lecture halls to receive training.

He lauded the MTN Foundation for its immense support for the education and health sectors.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu indicated that he had confidence in Mr Twum to deliver and justify an earlier call he made for a Ghanaian to head the MTN Ghana office.

The Asantehene indicated that his proposal had been heeded to by the international managers of MTN.

Mr Twum
The new CEO commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu for making such a proposal which had culminated in his appointment and promised that he would not let him down but would build on the successes of his predecessors.

He said MTN recognised the Ghanaian market, particularly the Ashanti Region, as a very critical sector of its customer base and would work assiduously to provide quality service and also increase economic empowerment.

Background
It would be recalled that in the middle of this year when some top management members of the MTN company paid a courtesy call on Otumfuo to brief him about the company, he told the management that Ghanaians were capable and ready to assume the headship of companies and impressed on the owners of such entities to offer Ghanaians that opportunity.

He also cautioned that those who would be given the chance would need to prove their worth by being professional, truthful and hardworking and not to engage in corrupt practices, to justify the confidence that would be reposed in them.
