‘Consider culture in education curriculum’

The Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has charged African governments to consider the cultural values of their countries in developing their education curricula. That, she said, was important in the socio-economic development of the continent.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said this when she opened the Extraordinary Meeting of the Education Research Network for West and Central Africa (ERNWACA) in Accra.

Strategic plan

The meeting reviewed and made critical decisions on the implementation of the five-year strategic plan of the network and also to position ERNWACA at the forefront of providing research services for educational development in Africa by the year 2020.

ERNWACA grant

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the ERNWACA’s grant programme was a commendable effort at institutionalising successive planning and ensuring sustainability of the ideals for which the network was formed.

“I sincerely wish to applaud the administrators of the network for it,” she said, adding that universities whose graduates competed as young researchers appreciated the support being provided by ERNWACA.

She expressed the hope that ERNWACA would make public more of its activities, results and impacts for funding.

Milestone

The Chairman of ERNWACA Board of Directors, Prof. Ajibade K. Adegoke, said the meeting marked another milestone in the history of ERNWACA as it further demonstrated the strong commitment and hard work of members in the realisation of its vision.

“We are moving from theory to action as the objective of this meeting is to launch the group two transnational project. As it stands for, ERNWACA is an action-oriented research institution by virtue of its focus on current and pertinent realities faced by educational systems,” he said.

Basic education

In a welcome address, the Co-ordinator of ERNWACA, Alhaji Rahim Gbadamosi, said the objective of ERNWACA was to help develop a culture among the 16-member countries, where the implementation of basic education projects would be based on solid findings.

“It is also envisaged that within the framework of ERNWACA, research data, procedures and findings could be shared to make research more efficient and cheaper and to avoid unnecessary costly repetitions and duplications,” he said.
