The building, which is expected to be completed in 12 months will have offices, multi-media classrooms, language laboratories, a library, a culture centre, an auditorium and other amenities.

In her address the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Madam Sun Baohong praised the Institute for its tremendous contribution to promoting the cultural exchange between China and Ghana and the teaching and learning of the Chinese language.

Expressing gratitude to the University of Ghana and for its support and contribution to the development of the Institute, she promised continued support to the development of the Institute.

The Director of the Institute, Dr Mei Meilian said the construction of the edifice will bridge the existing friendship between the two countries adding that the building would add further depths to the campus of the University of Ghana.

She said “the building will serve as parts of expanding the core function of Confucius Institute to promote the teaching, learning and spreading of Chinese language and culture as it deepens the ties of friendship between China and Ghana.”

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ernest Aryeetey said upon completion the Institute will serve as a hub for the promotion, teaching and learning of not only Chinese language and culture but also of Chinese traditional medicine and martial arts such as Taichi.

“The growth of the institute has become phenomenal so there was a need for larger permanent structures. Our expectations is that when this is over , the programs of the institute will be expanded very significantly and when that is done we will see many more Ghanaians of learning Chinese language and also the Chinese culture ,” he said.

Professor Aryeetey indicated that the Institute has made great efforts to promote China-Ghana educational cooperation and played a positive role in maintaining the friendship between the two countries.

He appealed to all stakeholders who had contributed to the success of the Institute over the last two years to continue to give it their needed support as it entered a new phase.
