The conference, the third edition of the annual international research conference, is organised by the College of Humanities of the University of Ghana (UG). It has been designed as a platform for young researchers to showcase their work and also learn from their established colleagues.

On the theme: “Humanities research and the new waves of globalisation”, the conference also seeks to foster interdisciplinary research in the pursuit of academic and national development.

Creating partnerships

In his address, the Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, noted that researchers had over the years operated in silos with very little collaboration with others.

However, he said, partnerships in the area of research were becoming relevant in sharing knowledge to achieving common goals, hence the conference to increase partnerships to create synergy and draw knowledge from different fields.

It is against this background that the college brought together academics from different countries and universities, as well as industry players to share research findings and to foster research partnerships.

More than 80 research works on various topics are expected to be presented at the conference.

“Through these annual conferences, the College of Humanities seeks to establish a culture of excellence in research for the benefit of the university and the broader society that we serve,” Prof. Agyei-Mensah said.

UG vision

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ebenezer Owusu Oduro, said the conference was timely and fitted into the vision of the university to become a research institute by 2024, and added that research was geared towards informing policy making.

The university was also working to enhance its external cooperation with others, he said, and added that it had made strides in its research networks by extending collaborations beyond the borders of Africa to Europe, America, Latin America and Asia.

That, he explained, had also led to the establishment of Asian and Latin America study centres aimed at creating opportunities for faculties and students to engage in research and exchange ideas with their colleagues.

Research approach

Delivering the keynote address, the acting Representative of the United Nations Population Fund - Ghana (UNFPA), Ms Erika Goldson, said adopting a collective research approach could contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), considering the fact that the world was inter-connected now.
