Computers for two schools at Mamfe

It was all joy and jubilation for pupils of the Methodist and Presbyterian junior high schools at Mamfe in the Eastern Region, when the Mamfehene and Kyidomhene of Akuapem, Osabarima Ansa Sasraku, handed over 20 computers to the school authorities.

The computers come in response to an appeal made to the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC) by the Mamfehene.

Although the pupils, especially those in the final year, have not used computers before, they are to answer questions on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) just like their predecessors who performed poorly in the subject at the examination.

The pupils, therefore, expressed their appreciation to GIFEC for the donation.

Osabarima Ansa Sasraku, who received the computers and in turn handed them over to the school authorities, said it was an unfortunate situation for pupils in rural schools who had not seen computers before to compete in computer-related examinations with  their colleagues in schools where pupils were well abreast of its use.

The traditional ruler, who was happy that at the long last some computers had been made available to the pupils at Mamfe, cautioned the teachers against monopolising the computers as if they were their personal property to deny the pupils the opportunity to use them.

The headmistress of the Mamfe Methodist JHS, Miss Mabel Bruce, gave the assurance that the computers would be put at the disposal of the pupils.

The Director of Administration of GIFEC, Mr Alfred Boham, said since computers were now associated with every aspect of human activity, especially in academic pursuit, it had become necessary for every child to have access to the device.

According to him, his outfit had realised that most pupils in rural schools who had no access to computers but were examined on them at the BECE could not match their counterparts in the metropolises, hence their decision to make some available to all rural schools.
