The four-storey, which has 24-classrooms, two large libraries and four science laboratories, is one of the five community day senior high schools promised by President John Dramani Mahama for the region and is scheduled to be handed over to the community before the 2015/2016 academic year begins.

It also has eight offices and an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory on each floor.

The project supervisor, Mr Bernard Osei Manu, told the Daily Graphic during a tour of the facility that a 36,000 litre capacity water reservoir and a mechanised borehole had been constructed as part of the project to supply potable water to the students and staff.

He said a 60-seater water closet facility and a waste disposal site had also been constructed for the school.

Mr Manu said the community was very supportive and offered various forms of assistance to the workers during the construction of the school.

The situation

Members of the Bamiankor community randomly interviewed by the Daily Graphic commended the government for the facility because secondary education had now been brought to their doorstep.

The Municipal Chief Executive of Nzema East, Mr James Atta Kakra Baidoe, said the siting of the school in the area would ensure that students who completed junior high school did not travel long distances to access secondary education.

He said the entire municipality had only one senior high school which was located at Nsein.

According to him, because it could not accommodate the large number of students who graduated from the junior high schools in the area, some of the students had to apply to schools at Axim or Esiama.

The MCE indicated that the school was also strategically located and would benefit communities in both the Nzema East and Ellembelle municipalities which were very close to Bamiankor.

“This facility will help our students and teachers to compete with their counterparts in the cities,” he said, and gave an assurance that the assembly, in collaboration with the education directorate, would ensure that the structure was well maintained after it had been handed over.

Other projects

Work on the other three schools in other parts of the region is progressing steadily and will be completed on schedule.
