The projects, which  have contributed meaningfully to academic and curricular activities, include the Autonomy Hall of residence, technology building, development of student leisure area, college site layout, renovation of the former guest house into principal’s residence, and pavement and landscaping of the campus.

The rest were redevelopment and equipment of the college clinic, renovation of five bungalows, construction and mechanisation of four boreholes, installation of 500 KVA generator and the establishment of the Graduate Office.

Prof. E.J. Flolu, the principal of the Kumasi Campus,  who disclosed this while sharing results of the college’s four-year strategic plan (2009-2014), with staff and students in Kumasi, said work on 10 other projects were progressing steadily

They included a 3,000-capacity convention hall, renovation of halls of residence, and construction of college playing field, among others.

On October 1, 2009, Prof. Flolu, assumed office as Principal of the College of Technology Education and  a week later, launched a four-year corporate strategic plan in line with his vision to catapult the college’s development.

Four years after the launch, the principal, who would be going on pension next year, is satisfied the college has made progress and is stronger than he met it.

He said the success story contained in the report was a reflection of teamwork in the implementation process.

The principal also mentioned a number of new academic programmes introduced at the Kumasi campus within the last four years and said they had helped to increase enrolment and raised the image of the college and the university at large.

He said the staffing situation also grew by 65 per cent.

In a related development, the 18th congregation of the UEW had been held at the Kumasi campus and a total of 2,456 graduates made up of 2387 undergraduates and 71 postgraduates were presented with their degrees.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor of UEW, Prof. Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, mentioned the special role UEW played in Ghana’s education delivery and said this called for total support from stakeholders to enable the university to deliver  on its mandate.

“Our mandate is to train high calibre of teachers, educational administrators and researchers who are highly motivated for effective delivery,” he said.

He said over the past 21 years, the university had employed every available resource to fulfil the mandate.

In spite of the achievements, the vice chancellor said, the university was confronted with some challenges including infrastructure to promote teaching and learning.

He challenged fresh university graduates to ‘think big’ as they moved into the world of work.

He said in deciding the kind of work they want to find themselves in, graduates had a duty to aim at achieving greater heights, albeit, legally.

The Chancellor of UEW, Okofo Amoako Bondam III, said since the government alone could not fulfil all the needs of the university, it was important that donors and other public spirited individuals and organisations came in to support.
