Clergy must supervise mission schools

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church, Right Reverend Francis Amenu, has asked the clergy of the church as local managers of church’s schools to update their supervisory roles to ensure that moral virtues are instilled in the pupils.

He said their supervision, together with that of the school authorities, would positively influence behaviour to check the increasing rate of moral decadence in the society.

Rt Rev. Amenu was delivering a speech at the joint synod for the Northern and Oti presbyteries of the church on the theme, “God of Life, Lead Us to Justice, Peace and Dignity for Growth and Wholeness”, at Jasikan.

Online course for diaspora

He disclosed that a distance and an online programme had been initiated for the training of people in the diaspora to conduct pastoral services on behalf of the church.

New pastors

The moderator also announced that 39 pastors would be ordained into the church at the next General Assembly to be held in Ho in August and a new moderator would be elected to end his six-year term of office, calling for peace during and after the period.

He also prayed for the delegates to choose a true man of God who would not exploit the position when elected.

Assistance to breast cancer patient

In an address, the Northern Presbytery Moderator, Rev. C. N. Agbley, expressed sincere appreciation to the standing committee of the church for donating GH¢3,000 to a breast cancer patient to undergo a surgical operation at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

New secretariat

He also announced that a secretariat had been completed for the presbytery, and called for donations to enable the presbytery to fully furnish the office with equipment such as furniture, computers and printers, as well as a photocopier and other relevant office equipment.

Human-initiated disasters

Speaking on the theme, the Western Presbytery Moderator of the church at Peki, Rev. R. Y. Videka, said justice and dignity were essential values in life but these virtues were gradually eluding the society, consequently putting the world at risk.

He said instances of human-initiated disasters were outnumbering uncontrollable natural disasters, causing man to inflict unnecessary and preventable harm and pain on neighbours through weaponry, guns and ammunitions, and the use of intemperate language to stir bad sentiments.

Proliferation of churches and morality

He also said the proliferation of churches all over the place without the expected decline in deviant and provocative behaviour was becoming counterproductive to efforts at creating a just and morally ordained society.
