The facility is made up of a six-unit classroom block, headmaster’s office, staff room, a library and a place of convenience, while the old block would be renovated for use by the school as a dining hall, a kitchen and a store room.

A sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the project, which is expected to be completed in three months, was jointly performed by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Sun Baohong, and the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya West, Ms Hanna Serwaa Tetteh.

Expansion project

Ms Sun said the sod-cutting ceremony for the school’s expansion project was taking place at a time when Ghana and China were celebrating the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and expressed optimism that the project would provide a congenial environment for the pupils to study and improve their academic performance.

According to her, the past 55 years had witnessed impressive achievements between China and Ghana on various fronts, especially in the education sector.

She pointed out that China had supported the construction of the permanent site for the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho, the distance education expansion project of the University of Ghana, as well as a number of schools in the country’s rural communities.

She mentioned further that the Chinese Embassy also supported the construction of two China-Ghana ICT laboratories in the Volta and Upper West regions, while another one was under construction in the Upper East Region.

Gratitude

For her part, Ms Tetteh, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, thanked the Chinese government for its support and stressed that the project was a manifestation of the strong relations between Ghana and China.

She said funds for the project were made available under a grant from the Chinese government to Ghana to improve education in the district and added that she was hopeful that the project would be executed on schedule for the benefit of the pupils.
