Two personalities from the town, Dr Agyei Kumi, a Senior Lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and Mr Michael Nkansah, an engineer of Golden Star Resources, a mining firm at Akyempim near Tarkwa, jointly provided GH¢10,000 as seed capital for the fund, while Mr George Aboagye, an Accra-based businessman, pledged GH¢2,000.

At the ceremony to launch the fund, Dr Agyei Kumi and Mr Michael Nkansah feted 2,500 pupils and students. The children enjoyed  food, drinks, biscuits and toffees.

In an address, Dr Agyei Kumi advised parents to enrol all their children in school and ensure that they complete their education successfully.

He stressed that the fund was not established on partisan basis and as such urged citizens of Manso, both at home and abroad, to lend their support so that Manso would produce intellectuals who would assist with its development.

He asked the people of the town to bury their differences and work in unity to develop the community.

Mr Nkansah drew the attention of the pupils and students to the importance of education, stressing that but for education he and his companions  would not have attained their current positions.

He, therefore, counselled parents to refrain from spending hugely on expensive clothes and funerals at the expense of their  children’s education.

The chief of Manso, Obrempong Sintim Poku III, who is also the Benkumhene of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, entreated all citizens of Manso to live as one.

He also urged the pupils and students to emulate Dr Agyei Kumi and Mr Michael Nkansah, who had benefited from the education they had, by studying hard in order to achieve academic laurels.

Obrempong Sintim Poku, who said he had earmarked a large tract of land for educational purposes, suggested to the government to establish a campus of the proposed Eastern Regional University at Manso.

The queenmother of Manso, Nana Amponsah Tenewaa III, encouraged the schoolchildren to refrain from attending video shows, funerals and wakes and rather concentrate on their studies.

Mr Edward Ansah, a former assembly member for Manso, donated 100 bags of sachet water towards the success of the function.
