Church sponsors students’ education

The Emmanuel Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Dansoman, Accra, has sponsored six brilliant needy students to further their education at the senior high school level.
Each of the six students received GH¢500 to cater for fees for the first term.

The beneficiaries are members of the congregation who sat the just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Four of the beneficiaries – Kevin Asare, Rachel Adjoa Ansomaa Akata, Wordsworth Awuah Larbi, and Alice Obeng – all attended Emmanuel Presby JHS, while Douglas Appiah and Stella Sarpong graduated from the Bishop John Daly JHS and the Weija Presby JHS respectively.

This is the twelfth time the church is sponsoring brilliant needy students in its congregation who but for the scholarship would not be able to receive secondary education.

At a brief awards ceremony, the guest of honour, Professor Olivia Kwapong, said the gesture was inspired by the biblical injunction on Christians to reach out to one another.

She advised the beneficiaries to study hard and refrain from deviant behaviours associated with secondary school education that would tarnish the image of the church.

A previous beneficiary, Nana Yaa Owusua Sekyere, said the scheme helped her to pursue secondary school education at Holy Child SHS, during which she excelled in Chemistry, Physics and Biology and also represented her school at the National Science and Maths Quiz competition.

She was presented with a cash prize of GHc1,000 by the church to help her further her studies at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in Kumasi.

One of the beneficiaries, Kevin Asare, said he was glad to have received the scholarship and promised to justify the confidence reposed in him.
