Chief calls for college of education at Donkorkrom

The continuous refusal of trained teachers to accept posting to the Kwahu Afram Plains North District is seriously affecting academic performance in the area.

As a result , a number of pupil teachers had been engaged over the years to augment the efforts of the few committed and selfless professional teachers in the district, yet their input is not up to expectation.

The Chief of Donkorkrom No. 1, Nana Akuamoah Boateng Tanor, disclosed this to the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Antwi Boasiako-Sekyere, when he called on him at his palace as part of his two-day working visit to the district.

He suggested that to help attract and retain teachers in the district, the government should as soon as possible, convert one of the senior high schools in the district, into a college of education to produce quality teachers to feed the schools.

Literacy level in the district

According to him, the establishment of a college of education would improve the literacy level in the district as a number of the youth would enrol at the college, because it would easily be accessible.

Nana Tanor was grateful to former President Rawlings-led administration for giving Afram Plains a facelift by connecting it to the national grid, telecommunication and motorable roads.

He said the people of Afram Plains were predominantly peasant farmers who found it difficult to afford the farm inputs in recent times.  He also expressed concern about the upsurge in illegal felling of trees and appealed to the government to intervene.

Vibrant economic activities

For his part, Mr Boasiako-Sekyere said formal education created jobs and opened up the society to vibrant economic activities. He was optimistic that the second campus of the proposed Eastern University that would be sited at Donkorkrom would get people into the classroom, improve the economic status of the communities, and attract professional teachers to the area.

The minister gave the assurance to liaise with the transport minister and the Volta River Authority to get a pontoon on the Volta Lake at Agordeke-Kpando and also reconstruct the landing site at Agordeke to link up the district to the Volta Region.

He later inspected work on an ongoing construction of a GH¢305,945.00- ICT centre and market stalls and stores at Donkorkrom and commended the contractors for a good work done.
