Central University holds 13th graduation

Ghana's High Commissioner to India, Mr Sam Panyin Yalley, has underscored the need for the nation to  invest more in the industrial sector to absorb the large number of students who graduate every year from the universities.

Delivering an address at the 13th graduation ceremony of the Central University College (CUC) at Miotso, near Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region on Saturday, Mr Yalley, who is an old student of the university,  said improving on the country’s educational system must go hand-in-hand with the creation of industries and factories for employing graduates, adding that education and development were like a value chain, “you can’t change one and leave the other”.

Advice

President of the university, Professor Kwesi Yankah, said over the years, the university had offered demand-driven programmes for the competitive job market.

He urged the graduands to make optimum use of the knowledge they had acquired from the university, and make a difference in whatever condition they found themselves.

In all,  2,108 students comprising 64 per cent females and 36 per cent males graduated from the school this year with Master Oliver Addo Mann emerging the overall best undergraduate student.

History of CUC

The Central University College is a privately-owned university college belonging to the International Central Gospel Church, with the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Dr Mensa Otabil, as the founder and Chancellor.

It started off as a pastoral training institute in 1988, and later became the Central Christian College in 1993, eventually becoming the Central University College in 1997. Among the stated aims of the university is to provide an "integrated and biblically-based tertiary education with particular reference to the needs of the African continent".

Mr Yalley, who chaired the function, advised the students to be worthy ambassadors, adding that, “You should lead and not be led”.

He also urged them to distinguish themselves in their various fields of endeavour and play their respective roles in support of government’s efforts to fight corruption and deal with waste in the public sector, stressing that they should be part of efforts to design solutions but not to create problems.
