Canadian International School inaugurated in Accra

The Canadian International School (CIS), established in Accra in April 2014, with support from the Canadian High Commission in Accra, and the Breton University (Canada), has been inaugurated.

The programme was held on the theme: ‘’The Canadian Curriculum: Prospects and Challenges’’.

Using the K-12 co-educational and IB school, and running the Nova Scotia Provincial curriculum, CIS intends to be the first and the best provider of Canadian education and global child development in Ghana.

At the ceremony, Mr Douglas Pitcher, Managing Partner, Director and Vice President of Geotech Airborne Limited, said the school was established for both Ghanaian and Canadian children to come together to learn about the culture of both countries.

He added that the Nova Scotia Scholarship curriculum would help the children to learn different languages, mainly English and French.

He also said, “It is very important that the Ghanaian system and the Nova Scotia curriculum be integrated. It is also important that you maintain the Ghanaian standard and if possible, improve on that standard’’.

Emphasising the need for the African child to cultivate the habit of reading, Mr Pitcher said  more library facilities should be built to boost and enhance the development of the African child’s brain.

The Principal of CIS, Mr Benedict Tetteh Yartey, stated that the school was built to facilitate the education and development of children in the pre-school from crèche to the 12th grade.

He assured all parents and guardians that their children would receive the best quality education and skills which would help them achieve greater heights in life.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr Christopher Thornley said, the two countries had over the years built a strong relationship which had been mutually beneficial to both countries, and pledged to strengthen the existing relationship between Ghana and Canada.

In her keynote address, the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, expressed optimism that the school would train students to be knowledgeable and well-educated in all their endeavours.
