The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the Breman Asikuma Senior High School (BASS) in the Central Region has held a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the construction of a  two-storey nine-unit classroom block.

The project, funded by the PTA and expected to be completed within six months, is to help address the classroom accommodation challenges facing the school, as a result of the increasing number of students.

BASS, which is popularly referred to as ‘Beautiful BASS’ due to its impressive performance in the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) over the years, had attracted a lot of students from far and near to the school.

Congestion

The situation has indeed resulted in congestion in the classrooms with its negative effect on teaching and learning.

As a remedy to the situation, the PTA is using the dues paid by each student to fund the construction of the project to augment the efforts of the government in its quest to address the numerous infrastructural challenges confronting the school.

The PTA has also handed over a 50-seater solar-powered Information and Communications Technology (ICT) laboratory to the school to enhance the teaching and learning of ICT.

It has also expanded one of the girls’ dormitories to house more of the students, as well as procured a new generating plant to provide electricity during power outages.

Contributions

In a short address during the ceremony last Saturday, the Bishop of the Winneba Diocese of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Right Reverend Dr John K. Buabeng-Odoom, recounted the enormous contributions of the forebears of the school, which has brought the school this far.

He stated that the founder members of the school laid a solid foundation which had enabled the school to stand the test of time, and it was therefore incumbent upon the current leadership of the institution to do same to sustain the school.

Rt. Rev. Dr Buabeng-Odoom, who is also the Board Chairman of the school, commended the PTA for its foresight to construct the classroom to help provide a conducive learning environment for the students, pointing out that the  efforts of their predecessors over 50 years ago, must be built upon so as to benefit future generations.

He further urged the PTA to ensure that the project was executed according to professional standards and ahead of schedule for it to be used for the intended purpose.

PTA Chairman

The school’s PTA Chairman, Mr Eric Owusu-Appiah, told the Daily Graphic  that when the current PTA executive assumed office, they realised that the school needed additional classrooms to accommodate the students and, therefore, decided to fund the construction of the classroom block to help reduce congestion in the classrooms with its negative impact on academic work.

According to him, upon the completion of the classroom block, the PTA would construct a new boys’ dormitory to accommodate more boarding students.

Mr Owusu-Appiah, who is also an old student of BASS, noted that each of the classrooms was expected to be occupied by 45 students and would therefore accommodate a total of 405 students when completed.

He appealed to the parents to pay their PTA dues regularly to ensure the early completion of the project for the benefit of their children.

The Headmaster of the school, Mr James Bambel, thanked the PTA for its numerous support towards the development of the school.
