The book, “Parenting and the Rights of the Child”, is in two volumes, and it identifies who a child is and his or her contributions towards national development.

Authored by Sheikh Mohammed Lamin Abdul Hammid, the Headmaster of the Ghana Lebanon Islamic JHS in Accra, the book also focuses on the contributions of parents in promoting the rights of children and assisting them to plan towards their future so that they do not become liabilities to their families and society.

Reason for writing the book

Briefing the Daily Graphic on why he wrote the book, Sheikh Hammid said society needed to uphold children’s rights and also help educate them on their rights and responsibilities as citizens, adding that “the child has the right to protection, good health and sound mind”.

Key points

The author said the book also taught children values such as tolerance, patience, manners and civil rights.

He said the book had been specially designed for every child and parent within and outside the country, irrespective of their religious background, and explained that it was meant to instill good values in readers.

Born and bred in a Zongo community, he said he had come to realise that children in such communities were exposed to physical, social and psychological experiences and challenges that affected them negatively, and that, he said, informed his decision to put the pieces together to write the book.

Ability to protect children

The Islamic scholar stated that the book did not only focus on children’s rights, but highlighted some key points which could help parents cater for their children without difficulties.
