In line with this, the college has started organising the maiden Mathematics and ICT competition dubbed; "BlueCrest train”, this year, which has brought 12 SHSs within the Greater Accra Metropolis together to vie for an ultimate prize.

Participants

The participants are from St Thomas Aquinas SHS, Harvard SHS, Holy Trinity Cathedral SHS, Labone SHS, Aburi Presbyterian SHS, Salem SHS, Accra High SHS, Preset Pacesetters SHS, LA Presec SHS, De-Youngsters SHS, Kinbu SHS and GHANATA SHS.

Addressing the press at a programme to mark the formal launch of the project in Accra last Thursday, the Rector of BlueCrest College, Professor Dr S. K. Roy, said the college intended to prepare SHS students adequately for the competitive world and their Mathematics examination.

Curriculum changes

He stated that students must be well equipped with training in Mathematics and ICT in order to undertake courses in engineering and construction, noting that "education is changing in Ghana because there is competition all around and we need to make students across the country part of the competition because it is a unique way to excellence.”

The Training and Development Officer of BlueCrest College, Mr Richard Nartey, explained that the competition was aimed at educating and empowering SHS students to succeed in their academic pursuit, noting that it would contribute to policy debates and sustainable development agenda of the country.

Giving details of the competition, he said each participant would get a tablet and each winner would get a laptop.

He added that "there is a surprise for the school that wins the competition."

He explained that the internal inter-house quiz competition organised by the Bluecrest Train team, in consultation with various school heads, was used to select the two candidates.

Background

Expressing optimism, Mr Nartey explained that the second edition of the BlueCrest Train would involve selected schools from the Greater Accra Region while the third and fourth editions would include the Eastern and Central regions. The fifth edition would combine forces for the inter-regional competition involving selected schools from all the regions.

“The BlueCrest Train attempts to make students aware of the core importance and benefits of adopting ICT and Mathematics in their respective careers.

He urged students to take Mathematics and ICT seriously because their application affected every aspect of human life.
