Bishop Herman College celebrates first headmaster

The Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Mr Joe Kpenge, has urged the authority of the Bishop Herman College at Kpando in the Volta Region to continue to make effective use of the style of administration of the school’s first Headmaster, Monsignor J.B. Eleeza, to sustain academic performance and discipline.

He said the several wise sayings of the former headmaster are life lessons that continue to guide the decisions and actions of students who passed through the college.

Mr Kpenge, who is also an old student of the college, made the statement when he chaired a durbar held by the  Bishop Herman Old Boys Union (BHOBU), as part of a three-day programme to celebrate the 80th birthday of Monsignor Eleeza at the college at Kpando.

“Father Eleeza is an institution” he stressed. He said it was necessary to make many more to benefit from those lessons.

The Chairman of the Board of Governors, Rev. Father Paul Agbodza, who represented the Bishop of the Ho Dioceses of the Catholic Church and Rt Rev. Bishop Francis Lodonu (both old boys), said the church in the region had begun compiling the moral education lessons of Monsignor Eleeza into a book to be used as Code of Correction for schools in the region.

He praised Monsignor’s dedication to work and said the Code of Correction that would be based on his teachings would go a long way to prepare students in schools across the Volta Region and beyond.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Fiifi Kwetey, also an old boy, said he and other students knew it was a privilege to have Monsignor Eleeza as headmaster but added that “it was after leaving BIHECO that it fully dawned on many of us what a gem you were”.

Epitome of discipline

He described Monsignor Eleeza as the epitome of discipline, devoted and committed to duty and with a fervent trust in God. He said he was a great teacher of life whose, “Moral Education lesson every Monday morning taught us critical things we needed to know about the ingredients to make the all round successful personality”.

The National Vice President of BHOBU, Prof. A.Q.Q.Abogye, was grateful to the former headmaster for his contribution to the college and said the decision to honour and celebrate him on his 80th birthday was to show  appreciation for his invaluable contribution to thousands of students who passed through his hands.

For his part, the current Headmaster of the College, Rev. Father Walter Agbetoh, who was a student and later a staff under the Monsignor Eleeza, said his leadership style had inspired him to work hard to make the college a great institution.

He said though the college continued to produce the best results in the region, his target was to be the nation’s best institution and urged the old students to continue to support him to achieve laurels.
