Bekwai Municipal Assembly votes GH¢1.2 million for education

The Bekwai Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region is spending over GH¢1.2 million on the development of education in the municipality.

This represents over 16 per cent of the assembly’s total budget of Gh¢6,950,572.00 for the 2013/2014 fiscal year.

Specifically, the budget covers the development of educational infrastructure, supply of furniture, support for brilliant, needy children and sponsoring the best teacher awards.

Other areas that benefited from the support are the organisation of workshops for Science Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) and the conduct of mock examinations for Basic Education Certificate Examination candidates.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Madam Mary Juantuah, who disclosed this to the Daily Graphic, explained that some of the projects were ongoing while others had been completed. She added that the support to education was due to the fact that it was the pivot on which the wheels of development rotated.

She was interacting with the Daily Graphic after the assembly’s second ordinary meeting at Bekwai, the municipal capital.

Assembly meeting 

Addressing the assembly earlier, the MCE said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government valued education as one of its topmost priorities and would continue to invest in the sector to better the lives of the people, especially empowering the youth to be economically independent.

She commended the police in the municipality for their dedication and hard work and urged the security personnel to continue to be vigilant at all times especially, during the Christmas festivities so that the people could live in peace and celebrate the yuletide.

She said the assembly would strengthen consultation with the various stakeholders to help improve the development of education in the municipality and improve access to all school-age children.

Madam Juantuah also said the assembly, in collaboration with the Municipal Education Directorate, was putting in place strategies to promote Technical Vocational Education Training, as well as Information and Communication Technology.

Projects

She announced that the Urban Roads Department would soon commence the tarring of six kilometres of roads in the municipality and mentioned roads such as the Adankranja Junction to Adankranja;  Abodom to Dotom; Railway Junction to Residency; Mrs Lamptey’s –Maame Nkran-Kokyerekrom link.

Other roads to benefit include the Kokyerekrom –Circuit Court link, spot improvement in Bekwai town and spot improvement on the Bekwai-Kuntanase-Ejisu road, among other roads.

He said communities such as Denyasefokrom, Oseikrom, Sunkyerekrom, Kwabenakrom and Biriwomannmu had been provided with a total of 418 electricity meters while communities such as Anwiankwanta, Sewaba, Old Asanso, Ankaase and Dominase benefited from the provision of transformers and electric poles to enhance the provision of light in those areas.

Health

Madam Juantuah hinted that the assembly, in collaboration with the Municipal Health Directorate, had intensified public education on cholera and Ebola to enable the people to take good care of themselves and stay healthy. She urged the assembly members to continue educating the electorate on health and other issues.
