BECE is not end to education

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Kojo Bonsu, has advised students who have just completed the week-long Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) not to consider the BECE as an end to their educational persuit.

An official of the assembly, Mrs Lois Ohene-Ayisi, gave the advise on behalf of Mr Bonsu when a team from the assembly and the Metro Educational Directorate visited some schools in the metropolis yesterday, the final day for the BECE.

The team, led by the Metro Educational Director, Mrs Naana Abudu, toured some centres in the metropolis, including the Serwaa Nyarko Girls and the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) centres.

Mr Bonsu advised the students to continue learning and prepare themselves to continue their education to the next level.

Mrs Abudu expressed delight at the number of candidates who took part in the examination, saying, the number of female students was encouraging.

The Principal of KTI, Dr Joseph Abeiku Apprey, urged the government to invest more in vocational and technical education.

He said there was the need to place emphasis on technical-based education to train the needed human resource to support the country’s efforts at attaining a middle-income status and to safeguard the future of the youth.

He said the country needed to move away from the concept of just going to school to get a certificate and concentrate on learning to get the needed skills that could support the country’s development agenda.

In separate interviews with the Daily Graphic, some of the students expressed the optimism of making it to senior high school.
