Be law-abiding - Minister urges students

The Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Pre-tertiary Education, Mr Alex Kyeremeh, has urged students of second cycle schools to use existing channels in their schools to find solutions to their grievances.

According to him, the use of such channels was very appropriate rather than the resort to the destruction of school property.

Mr Kyeremeh made the call in an interview with the Daily Graphic during a visit to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), following acts of vandalism by students of the Walewale Senior High School in the Northern Region.

The angry students set ablaze portions of their headmaster’s bungalow and destroyed the school’s computer laboratory.

They hurled stones at policemen who went to the school’s compound to quell the rioting, injuring two of them in the process.

They also smashed the windscreen of a Toyota Land Cruiser and a private car parked at the Walewale Police Station.

Mr Kyeremeh said the acts by the students were uncalled for. He added that the district and regional directorates of education had since been charged to investigate the matter and come out with what went wrong.

“Nobody should take the law into his or her own hands and do what he or she thinks is right. There are avenues to channel their grievances and they should use them whenever they have problem,” he said.

Twenty-four students of the Walewale Senior High School who are alleged to have engaged in the destruction of property have been arrested.
